Backgrond: Today world faces the crisis of aging population. Dementia can be considered as one of the most important diseases of elderly. Psychophysiological researches about dementia can attract our attention us to more objective findings. Changes in baseline skin conductance in patients suffering from Schizophrenia were revealed in previous studies. Regarding common neurodegenerative base between Dementia and Schizophrenia, such skin conductance changes may also be seen in patients with Dementia and there are few researches about this. The purpose of this study is to compare the level of electrical conductivity of the skin conductance level (SCL) between elderlies with dementia and those without dementia.Materials and Methods: A case control study was conducted in the care center of elderlies, after examination and using CDR, 34 patients with dementia and 34 non-demented were selected and the later considered as the control group. The baseline skin conductance of these two groups was measured by Skin conductance measurement channel of biofeedback device and values of baseline skin conductance were compared between groups using t test. Findings: Members of the groups had similar personal characteristics. Comparison of baseline skin conductance showed 0.260±0.251 ms in patients with dementia and 0.600±0.425 ms in non-demented that there is significant (p<0.001).Conclusion: Baseline skin conductance level in patients with dementia is significantly less than that in the control group. Investigation of SCL in different dementia subtype will help use a better understanding of brain function.

Aims: Complex physical movements that are often dangerous have increased the importance of balance in military forces. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between cadets’ physiological arousal and activation with performance in a static balance task. The task was chosen according to its association with military health and physical fitness. Methods: This descriptive study with correlation pattern was carried out in 2009 on 30 male cadets with the age range of 19-23. Skin conductance Level (SCL) as arousal index was recorded continuously during the 30-second performance of a static balance task. Sway index was recorded on an electronic stabilometer as performance measure. Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise linear regression was used to analyze the data by SPSS 16 software. Results: Results indicated a negative linear relationship between activation and performance, while arousal did not correlate with performance. Activation also predicted performance with a medium strength. Conclusion: The quality of the task is affected by activation, but not arousal. Confirmation of these data in future studies will lead to comprehension of the interaction between physiological measures and its behavioral associations in high level military or sport performance, especially in emotional contexts.

Background and Aims Time-of-day is a factor that could affect balance performance. On the other hand, arousal fluctuates throughout the day. The aim of this study was to investigate the static balance performance prediction based on arousal and activation in circadian rhythm. Methods In the current study, 30 healthy subjects (age= 21±,0. 5 years) participated. Static balance performance was measured three times: 10: 00 am, 15: 00 pm, and 8: 00 pm. Arousal was recorded continuously during the performance of the balance task. A balance scoring test (BESS) and a Bioderm device were used to measure static balance and arousal. Repeated measures ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and regression analysis were used to analyze the data. Results Results indicated that balance performance was greater at 3: 00 pm than at 8: 00 pm and 10: 00 am (P<0. 05). The relationship between activation and static balance performance was significant (P<0. 05), while no significant relationship was found between arousal and static balance performance. Also, the intensity of activation correlation and static balance performance was higher at 3: 00 pm (P<0. 05, r=-0. 46). The regression results showed that activation was a significant predictor at three different times of the day. Conclusion According to the results, these findings can provide evidence for differentiation between arousal and activation as separable aspects of the energetics of physiological and behavioral function. It also introduces activation as a factor that raises the static balance in the afternoon to morning and evening.

Abstract:

The purpose of the present study is to investigate the individual differences in the association between activation and performance in a sport shooting task. Arousal in recent studies has been defined as the energetic state at particular time, reflected in electrodermal activity and measured by skin conductance level; and activation as the change in arousal from a resting baseline to the task situation. This approach to arousal and activation implicates no association between arousal-performance and highlights the association between activation-performance. Nineteen elite sport shooters (10 females, 9 Males, mean age=29.9) participated in the study. Skin Conductance level was recorded as the indicator of arousal and scores were recorded as performance measure. The results indicated a negative linear relationship between activation and performance. However, at the individual level, the observed relationship wan neither linear nor consistent; several subjects showed a U and several other showed an inverted-U relationship between variables. The results are discussed in relation to the recent hypothesis separating arousal from activation and the hypothesis explaining the association of arousal and performance.

Abstract:

Background and Aim: Dynamic balance is a key element in everyday and sports activities and it is important to examine the factors that affect it. The present study focused on the relationship between arousal and activation with dynamic balance at different times of the day. Materials and Methods: A total of 30 male participants, aged 21. 01± 1. 64 performed dynamic test at 10: 00 a. m., 15: 00, and 20: 00 p. m. on a single day. Skin conductance level of participants was recorded continuously during performing balance task. ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and regression were used to analyze the data. Results: The results indicated that dynamic balance based on reaching distance was higher at 15: 00 p. m. than 20: 00 p. m. and 10: 00 a. m. It was also found that a linear relationship exists between activation and performance; the intensity of correlation was higher in the afternoon. Conclusion: These findings support the idea on separation of arousal and activation as separable aspects of the physiological and behavioral functions. In this approach, the activation was introduced for the afternoon as the factor causing superiority of dynamic balance, as compared with morning and evening.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between skin conductance as an indicator of arousal state and post-error slowing as an indicator of performance monitoring in soccer referees. For this purpose, 43 referees aged 20-30 years participated in this study. The skin conductance was evaluated at the baseline and during the Simon task performance. Then, the performance accuracy, reaction time in correct trials, reaction time in post-error responses and difference of reaction time in post-error to post-correct trials (post-error slowing) as reaction to error were investigated. The results showed that there was not a significant relationship between skin conductance, correct responses percentage and mean reaction time. On the other hand, there was a significant relationship between the skin conductance level at the baseline and reaction time in the post-error trials and post-error slowing. These findings suggest individual differences in performance monitoring and, accordingly, the response of soccer referees to the error is predictable from the level of skin conductance at baseline.

Abstract:

The present study investigated the effects of physiological arousal and cognitive anxiety on performance accuracy and kinematic features of gun in expert and novice groups. The physiological arousal was recorded with skin conductance response. Performance accuracy and kinematic features of gun such as total movement time, peak velocity, displacement in horizontal and vertical axis were measured by using mixed variance analysis test with repeated measures design. Increased physiological arousal and anxiety showed induced pressure conditions. More increase in the physiological arousal in novice group led to an increase in the peak velocity and the displacement in the vertical axis of the gun and a reduction of the performance accuracy. However, the performance of the expert group increased with decreased displacement in two axes under pressure conditions. The findings support the prediction of the catastrophe model, which conceptualized based on the relationship of motor performance with physiological arousal and cognitive anxiety.
